food rescue program

Food Security

Impact LA's Food Rescue Program is designed to address food insecurity by recovering surplus food from local restaurants, grocery stores, and distributors and redistributing it to underserved communities. The program ensures that children and families in need have access to nutritious meals while reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.

Program Goals

  1. Reduce Food Insecurity: Ensure that vulnerable populations, particularly children, receive regular, nutritious meals.
  2. Recover and Redistribute Food: Rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute it efficiently to community partners and families in need.
  3. Expand Access to Nutritious Meals: Provide meals to afterschool programs, community centers, shelters, and other organizations serving low-income communities.
  4. Promote Sustainable Practices: Minimize food waste and environmental impact through strategic food recovery and distribution efforts.
  5. Strengthen Community Collaboration: Partner with local businesses, nonprofits, schools, and government agencies to build a sustainable food support network.

Benefits for Participants

  • Access to Free, Nutritious Meals: Ensures that children and families receive high-quality food without financial burden.
  • Improved Health and Well-being: Reduces hunger-related health issues such as malnutrition, obesity, and developmental challenges.
  • Enhanced Academic and Social Performance: Supports children's cognitive and physical development, leading to better school performance and social engagement.
  • Community Empowerment: Engages volunteers, businesses, and partner organizations in a shared mission to combat hunger and food waste.
  • Environmental Impact: Decreases food waste by repurposing surplus food, reducing landfill waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

why donate?

HUNGER RELIEF:

Nearly 5 million people in California, including individuals, families, and children, struggle with food insecurity. Not all of these families are eligible for federal assistance, or this assistance doesn’t meet their needs- YOU can help fill this gap by donating your surplus wholesome food to local nonprofit or charitable hunger relief groups.

MANDATORY ORGANICS RECYCLING LAW (AB 1826):

Beginning January 2016, businesses that generate a certain amount of waste per week must recycle their organic waste (which includes food waste). Donating surplus wholesome food is a strategy to reduce the amount of organic waste that ends up in your waste bin.  Food generating businesses must donate the maximum amount of excess edible food.  To learn more about AB 1826, visit: https://calrecycle.ca.gov/recycle/commercial/organics/

Fight Climate Change by Recycling Organic Waste (SB 1383)

As part of an effort to reduce methane emissions, SB 1383 is a state law that establishes a statewide goal to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% by 2025. Food generating businesses must donate the maximum amount of excess edible food. Learn more about SB 1383, visit: https://calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp/foodrecovery/donors/

ENHANCED TAX DEDUCTION:

If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for the federal enhanced tax deduction which allows you to deduct the smaller of the following two: (a) twice the basis value of the donated food or (b) the basis value of the donated food plus one-half of the food’s expected profit margin.
